Born in Damascus in 1918, Nazem Al Jaafari graduated from the Department of Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, Cairo, Egypt; in 1947. Before his death in 2015, Al Jaafari worked as an art teacher in high schools and in the Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus University; and was appointed head of the Department of Painting in the same faculty. He held solo exhibitions in Damascus and participated in group exhibitions in Damascus, Rio de Janeiro, and Paris. Though he approached some subjects, such as Damascene neighbourhoods and portraits, with traditions of Realism; Al Jaafari was an Impressionist, for defining characteristics of the school showed in most of his work.
