Biography

Using a bright vivid palette, Rida Hus Hus is known for abstracted city scenes and landscapes that have a harmonious rhythm in their geometric shapes.

Born in Homs, Rida Hus Hus (1939–2016) graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus University in 1966. He received a scholarship to study tapestries and illustration at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1970 and another to study painting at the University of Kansas in the US from 1983–85. Afterwards, he studied printmaking in Berlin under artist Jürgen Parusel.

When Hus Hus did return to Syria, he worked as a lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus University and the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Damascus. During a far-reaching career, he created set designs for feature films, wrote for journals and translated art and philosophy publications into Arabic.

Operating outside of government-sponsored exhibitions, he would sell work from his home or in independent galleries. Taking day trips, he would sketch landscapes for later compositions or work directly in pastels.

Traveling throughout his life using both Germany and Syria as bases, Hus Hus also lived and exhibited in Romania, Jordan, Turkey, Iran and Cyprus. His works were acquired by the Syrian Ministry of Culture, National Museum of Damascus, and are in private collections.
